Twitter – it’s not always the right strategy

by Peter Fletcher on June 7, 2009

I recently met with the management team of a sucessful real estate agency in Perth. They’d heard about Facebook and Twitter and had called me in for some advice. But after a brief chat it became clear they just weren’t ready for social media. Sure, I said, jump on Twitter and experiment, but do that as a way to learn rather than as a corporate strategy on the fast track to failure.

Then this morning Maria Reyes-McDavis caught my attention with a link to the Top Ten Reasons Why Your Company Should Not Tweet. Put simply Twitter, Facebook and blogs aren’t the best tools for everyone. Sure they work for many, but for some they might be plain wrong. And if social media isn’t the best fit, it’s better to know that before wasting time and resources on something that will achieve little or nothing.
