Welcome to Social Media Marketing 101

The Real Estate Marketing Maven logoIf you’re reading this you’re probably attending my Social Media Marketing 101 workshop through Morton Learning. Its going to be an exciting, fast-paced, interactive learning experience. Although I plan to cover the basics of blogging, Facebook and Twitter, I’m keen to have the content and learning shaped by the group.

Invariably a foray into social media marketing creates lots of questions. Some ask about the return on investment from social media marketing, others want to know about the legal and public relations risks involved. To start the thinking process, read this Social Media Marketing Report. You may be surprised by some of the findings and encouraged to know that your questions are shared by others.

And to get the party really started, I invite you to pose your question – or questions – in the comment text box below. While you’re there, be sure to leave your web address and perhaps tell us a little about yourself and what you hope to get out of this course. By the time we all meet I hope that we’ll all be ready and raring to go.

See you soon.

If I was going to allocate an hour a day (initially) to social media what should I be doing - what mediums/websites and what content? It seems that while this medium appears to be cheap in terms of dollars it can be very expensive in terms of time if not used efficiently. I suppose that my question could be rephrased as "how do I get maximum bang for my buck in terms of time?"
  • Great question Sven. You're right, social media can be time intensive. What I'm hoping we'll discover is some ways to encourage our communities to leverage that investment in time.

    Hi Peter,

I will like to know how to make use of online social media to cultivate quality sales leads? In my line of work, there are situations where my database no longer works well for me and I have to look "out" to collect new database. For instance, I am currently promoting an over 55s development, I would like to know how i can reach out to this group of people via online media. Where are they and how can I get them to accept and start reading our blog, fb and twitter? Do we need to link these sites back to search engine, if so how do we achieve that? Local papers and state papers used to work well for the property industry however things have changed today and they become less effective now for the dollars we spent.

How should we cultivate database from the use of social media? Take for instance, we have a development starting in 9 months time however we already have 300 people on our register for interest list. What can i do to continue cultivate interest in them so that I do not lose them before the development commence?

On a personal level, I have some ambitions in setting up an online clothing shop in the future. I would like to know how I can tap into the global network so that my business stands out against the rest (besides paying for search engine ranking).

I look forward to hearing some solutions to my questions above this Friday and forgive me for been so straightforward.
  • Thanks Kelly. I appreciate your straight talk. Let's get the group to work on building some great solutions to those questions on Friday.
  • That last one's a cracker of a question. Should agents put ads on social networking sites? It will be worth spending a bit of time on that one Lynda. This is going to be such a lively discussion.

Hey Peter most of the questions I would like answered have been bought forward already by the comments above - i do have a twitter page but I am unsure what all the different @twitter or @whatever mean. The "introductions" i guess to the coments or quotes on twitter leave me a bit confused and I can't seem to follow where they are from or going to? I still have to get it sorted on my phone too so I know that is a telstra issue. When I get an hour to spend talk ing to them I wil try and sort it out. Other than that how do you place real estate ads on there? and how do you know how many people look at them?
  • That's a great point Charmaine. It's easy to run around like a nit in a fit if there are no priorities in place. Social media marketing shouldn't be about creating extra work, but making things more efficient and effective.
  • Hi Peter,

For me i have a reasonable (social) involvement in facebook, twitters etc but i want to know how i can relate this media to the real estate company i work for, how to decide what is a priority and how to make it interesting/informative and time effective for me to complete in the workplace.

Look forward to meeting you on friday.
  • Maybe I need my very own course. Will definitely be picking your brain real soon. I have managed to implement the website changes you suggested which has at least increased my search engine referral percentage. Facebook revamp will be the next be challenge.
    See you Friday.
  • @Amanda Morgan Whoa. I didn't know this course was going to be a two day intensive ;-). Let's see how far we get for you. It's so exciting.
  • @David James Let's see if we can find a way to leverage your networking skills with social media. You might be sales coaching's answer to Ashton Kutcher.

@Sara James It's great to have you on board Sara. See you Friday.
  • Hi Peter,
    Long time no speak!
So many people use social media in their business, how can I do the same and be just as effective? I look forward to learning a lot!
    See you Friday

Hi Peter, I think the main question that has me tangled relates to "Question #3 Where do I start?, in the Social Media Industry Marketing Report". I follow the trends in the US relating to technology, social media and I personally tweet, facebook, friendfeed etc. (socially at the moment until I find my niche). I mainly follow the "news" that interests me. I can see many taking advantage of it - but I personally find it hard to relate to my own real estate business and how to make the experience relevant & interesting for what will start out to be a small fan base. I have reserved my domain names, started drafting my blog - but I just want to be clear & relevant with my message. Just thought of a name for my blog - "Procrastinator's Corner"! See you Friday.
  • Hi Peter

I would be considered the novice of the group I'm sure so my questions may seem vague but I will give it a go. These are the things I've always wanted to know about Social Media:

Is facebook this best medium to build business contacts or would you use LinkedIn as well to build contacts.

How to you legally find new facebook friends to add to your business site.

What is the purpose of a blog and what is the difference between posting on a blogging and posting onto facebook.

How does a blog benefit your contact with clients - is it the same or better than facebook.

Where am I going to get the time to facebook, blog and then twitter. It sounds awfully time consuming . Do I need all three social media tools - can they somehow be integrated into one central area .

What personal information or conversations are appropriate for a business facebook page. Do my clients really want to know what I have done on the weekend?

I've set up a personal facebook page. How different should my business facebook page be in terms of content and communication style.

It seem that many facebook users give up their privacy to be on facebook. Is this really necessary. How can I protect my identity and personal information.
