10 reasons a blog is important to your real estate business

by Peter Fletcher on December 8, 2008

Here’s 10 reasons why I believe blogging can help grow your listings and sales. And make you popular and really cool.

  1. Blogs are search engine friendly. If you’re blogging about real estate in your area your blog posts will contain lots of keywords. Keywords, such as the words ‘real estate’ and the name of your pet suburb, help Google’s page ranking system decide that your site is a great information source for the person doing the search.
  2. Blogs are search engine friendly. Yes, I know, I already said that. But this time it’s because Google’s page ranking system loves fresh content. If your home page isn’t updated regularly Google assumes you’ve lost interest. Pages with the freshest content are placed higher in the search results. A regularly updated blog feeds Google fresh content – and you get more visitors to your site.
  3. Sharing information about your community sets you apart as a market expert. Before they ever meet you prospective sellers know that you know your stuff.
  4. Blogging is a community based conversation started by you. It’s like being the centre of attention at a party for all the right reasons. That’s usually a good thing, right?
  5. A blog gives your customers a way to have their say about what’s happening in their patch. Everyone gets to participate in the conversation.
  6. Your team gets to participate in a conversation. Either through comments or their own blogs your team gets to contribute to a conversation in a way that’s not possible without a blog. The more people in the conversation the more your name gets known.
  7. A conversational blog helps humanise your business. It lets people in and removes the barriers. You’ll still be an agent but one with a heart and a pet dog. And a sick kid.
  8. You become the source of information for your customers. By providing links to real estate specific resources your blog becomes a one stop shop.
  9. A blog allows you to break news to the public that isn’t covered in the mass media. And it allows your readers to discuss it. You become a community maven.
  10. Blogs are still relatively new to real estate in Australia. Being the first in your area with a blog sets you apart as one of the cool kids, an innovator.

I could go on and on but the important point here is that blogs are, well, important. A blog is the centrepiece to most successful social media strategies. So, go on, join in the fun. Start by leaving a comment here. Do you think a blog would benefit your business?

Blogging is not the wave of the future. It is the wave of now. Having a marketing plan that does not including blogging is not a wise choice. The benefits of blogging far outweigh the time and effort that go into it. As the real estate world continues to move forward, more and more people will continue to start their home searches on the internet as opposed to walking into a Real Estate office. -Charlie
